Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen
Good reasons to choose toxin free.. It is better for you..
The main difference between natural (physical) and chemical sunscreens are the 'active' ingredients.
There are over 3 dozen permitted chemical active ingredients for Australian sunscreens.
There is increasing concern over these permitted chemicals affecting our hormones,(Dioxybenzone and oxybenzone are two of the worst endocrine disrupters), damaging our skin, even increasing the risk of cancer.
They have even been known to trigger skin pigmentation!
Chemical based sunscreens work by absorbing the sun's rays once they have penetrated the skin. A chemical reaction then nuetralises the rays, (sometimes scattering) which in turn can generate free radicals and oxidation, causing damage and aging.
Natural sunscreens work by blocking; the sun's rays are reflected and they cannot penetrate the skin. Many natural sunscreens also contain antioxidants, helping to improve skin condition.
With chemical products they need to be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure, in order to soak in. This is not the case with naturals, as they sit on top of the skin, working immediately.
Another benefit of natural sunscreens, is they are generally tolerated by most skin types, whereas chemicals can be irritating to many people.
